Aloha Mixed Plate was packed for lunch. We waited about 30 minutes or so before we got seated. We were seated near the back under shaded area with a great view of the ocean.
I ordered a blended beverage of mango with lime and orange juice with strawberry swirls because it was broiling hot. The drink was super pretty and refreshing, full of fresh strawberry and mango taste.
I wanted more variety so I went with their lunch special mixed bento – hurricane chicken, garlic shrimp, shiitake rice, and tropical slaw. Sounded pretty awesome, eh? Many reviews said they gave generous portions, but I wouldn’t consider this big for $19. The garlic shrimp was jumbo and tender. The breading for the fried chicken was soggy and oily, and the chicken meat was fatty. I was not a big fan, but B seemed to like it. Shiitake rice was savoury with seaweed bits. Picked radish was good. The tropical slaw didn’t match the description, I didn’t find a single pineapple or jalapeno in mine?.
B predictably ordered the kalbi ribs. This had got to be the tiniest portion I had seen for kalbi plate in Hawaii?. The kalbi was tender and flavourful, just a bit too salty and sweet for me.
This popular restaurant had beautiful waterfront views and nice ambiance, however, they were slow at churning out dishes and the portion size was average. And the food was average too, in my opinion. Worth a visit if you want the good view.
